Types of Carpet

What are the Different Types of Carpet?

Today’s market features a wide variety of carpet types that can be confusing to choose between when it comes to finding the right one for your home. As your shopping, it’s important to consider factors beyond color, patterns, and texture in order to understand how a specific carpet will perform over time and if it’s suitable to your needs. Glenwood Springs Carpet One Floor & Home has an excellent selection of gorgeous carpets and our local experts can help guide you through the process of finding one that’s perfect for you — whether that means stain-resistant, long-lasting, eco-friendly, or more.

Carpets are made using fibers that each have different benefits. The fibers play a large role in how the carpet will perform, from stain-resistance to handling wear and tear, to keeping its dimension, and beyond. They can be either natural or synthetic, and include nylon, polyester, triexta, olefin/polypropylene, and wool. It’s important to consider factors like if you have pets, young children, or an active lifestyle that might mean the carpet is exposed to spills, mud, messes, and more. The type of fiber a carpet is made of will indicate how well it can standup to everyday issues like these.

Types of Carpet Fibers

Wool is the most common natural fiber used in carpeting and is popular for being a healthy and eco-friendly choice. It’s sustainably made and is known for its ability to filter air by trapping particles and debris. Wool is also extremely durable and its naturally curly structure prevents matting over time.

Nylon is a synthetic fiber that’s considered one of the most durable and long-lasting carpet materials available. Although it’s strong and can handle pet claws, heavy traffic, and everyday wear and tear, it’s less stain-resistant than other fibers, so it’s usually given stain and fade-resistant treatments.

Polyester is a synthetic fiber that’s typically touted as a more affordable, but less durable alternative to nylon. New innovations in polyester have made it much stronger than in the past, and some modern polyester carpets are considered just as durable as nylon.

Triexta is a synthetic fiber that’s physically similar to polyester, but performs more like nylon. It’s extremely durable and long-lasting. Unlike nylon, it’s naturally stain-resistant and doesn’t need to be treated with chemicals to create this effect.

Olefin/Polypropylene is a synthetic fiber that’s generally more affordable than nylon, polyester, and triexta. It’s highly stain-resistant because the fibers don’t absorb liquid, but not as durable as other fibers, making it best suited for low-traffic spaces. It’s also extremely fade-resistant because of how the fibers are dyed.
